Magic Happens With Mulch

Two of my mom’s favorite things are having her family around the dining room table and coming home to a pretty house.  We have a running joke about being 5 pounds heavier when we break free from the pull of that table.

Her house is postcard pretty – simple, classic landscaping offset by meandering mulched beds.  I am her mulcher.  Twice a year.  In Spring, I wake up her beds with fresh mulch and in Fall I tuck them in for Winter.  It’s what I’ve always done.

This year I attended a lecture on mulch at the Mid-Atlantic Horticultural Short Course.  Fascinating.  I could have listened all day.   A whole world of activity happens because of mulch.  For more info click here.

But, whether you know mulch standards, benefits, symbiotic relationships, or just do it because it’s pretty, magic happens with mulch.  And the best part for me - when I’m done, I get to go sit at my mom’s table.

Spring Blooming Camellias

A southern garden favorite – profuse winter to spring blooms in every imaginable shade of pink, red and white.  Shiny green leaves year round, best grown in semi shade.  Find an assortment of sizes and colors at the garden center now!

Hellebores

More commonly called Lenten Rose, or Christmas Rose, due to its very early bloom time.  Hellebores offers colorful blooms in pinks, whites, yellows and soft greens as early as January that last well into March.  Plant this sweet perennial in shade.  Have deer?  Don’t worry, they won’t eat it
