Zamioculcas zamiifolia, more commonly known as the ZZ Plant, is an easy to care for houseplant, suitable for those new to indoor gardening and those looking for a low maintenance plant that doesn’t need a lot of fussing.
Light – Does well in many lighting conditions from low to bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight as the leaves can be scorched.
Water – ZZ plants require minimal watering, due to their water storing root systems. On average, they can go 2 to 3 weeks without being watered. Be sure to check the soil, it should be almost completely dry before your water it again.
Soil – Well-draining potting soils, like Espoma Potting Soil, are perfect. If you find that your soil is not draining or drying out fast enough, add perlite or sand to increase aeration.
Temperature - Does well in temperatures between 60° and 75°. ZZ Plants will decline in temperatures below 45 degrees.
Humidity – Tolerant of both low and high humidity.
Fertilization – A balanced liquid fertilizer, like Bonide Liquid Plant Food, can be used every few months during the growing season. There is no need to fertilize in winter.
Size – Can reach between 2 and 4 feet tall at maturity.
Repotting – ZZ Plants don’t need to be repotted very often and they can handle being pot bound for a while. You’ll want to wait until their bulbous rhizomes begin pushing out of the soil or (if their current container is plastic) until the roots begin to warp the shape of the pot. Select a pot that is only 1 size larger than the current container and has good drainage.
Propagation – Can be propagated through division when repotting or from cuttings.
Toxicity – Mildly toxic to people and pets if ingested.
