Also known as Umbrella Tree, this indoor tree comes in both full size and dwarf varieties.
Light – Bright, indirect light is preferred though they can tolerate moderate light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause leaf scorch, and low light which can lead to plant decline.
Water – Allow Schefflera to dry out at least half way before watering. Be careful not to over water. Yellowing leaves are a sure sign your Schefflera is getting too much water.
Soil – Well draining soil. Scheffleras do not tolerate wet feet. If your soil is staying too wet, add perlite to increase drainage or water less frequently.
Temperature – Ideal temperature for Schefflera is between 65° and 85°. Don’t expose them to temperatures below 55° and keep them protected from drafts.
Humidity – While Schefflera can tolerate average humidity levels, they prefer higher humidity. Regular misting, a nearby humidifier or a spot in a brightly lit bathroom are easy ways of increasing humidity.
Fertilization – Feed regularly spring through fall with a balanced fertilizer like Bonide Liquid Plant Food. There is no need to fertilize in winter.
Size – Full sized Schefflera can reach up to 15 feet tall while dwarf varieties average between 4 and 6 feet tall.
Repotting – Repot Schefflera once a year in spring. Select a container no more than 1 to 2 sizes larger than its current container and make sure it has good drainage.
Propagation – Schefflera can be propagated by stem cuttings.
Toxicity – Mildly toxic to people and pets.
