Dragon Tree Care

A member of the Dracena family, this unique indoor tree is easy to care for and does well in multiple environments.

Light – Bright, indirect is preferred, but Dragon Trees are adaptable to moderate and low light. Avoid direct sunlight as it can result in scorching of the leaves.

Water – Dragon Trees prefer to dry about half way before they are watered. Be careful not to over water as it can result in leaf drop and root rot.

Soil – Well draining soil, like Espoma Potting Soil. If your soil is staying too wet, add perlite or ease back on your watering.

Temperature – Dragon Tree prefer temperatures between 60° and 75°, but that can tolerate temperatures into the mid 50° range.

Humidity – While Dragon Trees are tolerant of average humidity levels, they prefer higher humidity. Regular misting, a tray of pebbles and water or a nearby humidifier are surefire ways to make your Dragon Tree very happy. Alternatively, a bathroom is a great location for a Dragon Tree as it’s the most humid room in your home.

Fertilization – Fertilize regularly spring, summer and fall with a balanced fertilizer, such as Bonide Liquid Plant Food. There is no need to fertilize in winter.

Size – Dragon Trees can reach 8 feet tall indoors, but they are relatively slow growing so it can take a while to reach that size.

Repotting – Repot as needed, usually every 2 to 3 years. Select a container no more than 1 size larger than its current pot with good drainage. For more mature Dragon Trees, add fresh soil every 1 to 2 years and repot every 5 to 6 years.

Propagation – Easily propagated by cuttings.

Toxicity – Dragon trees are moderately toxic to people and pets when ingested.
