Also known as Dumb Canes, Dieffenbachia are similar to Chinese Evergreens and require similar care.
Light – Dieffenbachia prefer moderate to bright, indirect light though they can tolerate low light as well. Avoid direct sunlight which can lead to leaf scorch.
Water – Water once the top 2 to 3 inches of soil are dry. Be careful to never let a Dieffenbachia fully dry out.
Soil – Dieffenbachia prefer well draining soils. If your soil is staying too wet, add perlite to increase drainage.
Temperature – Temperatures between 65° and 80° are ideal. Don’t expose to temperatures below 55° and keep Dieffenbachia from drafts.
Humidity – Dieffenbachia enjoy high levels of humidity. A nearby humidifier, frequent misting or a tray of water and pebbles are easy ways to raise humidity levels. Alternatively, a bathroom is a great location for Dieffenbachia due to their high humidity levels.
Fertilization – Feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer such as Bonide Liquid Plant Food.
Size – Dieffenbachia average 3 to 5 feet tall when grown indoors.
Repotting – These plants are fast growers and it’s common for them to need repotting at least once a year. Make sure to select a container that is no more than 2 sizes larger than their current pot and that is has good drainage.
Propagation – Easily propagated via stem cuttings. Make sure to wear gloves when propagating.
Toxicity – Highly toxic to people and pets when ingested. Sap can cause skin irritation.
