Chinese Evergreen Care

Aglaonema, more commonly known as Chinese Evergreen, are low maintenance houseplants that do better when you neglect them a little.

Light – Tolerant of most types of light, solid green varieties love low light while variegated ones do better in moderate to bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which will scorch the leaves.

Water – Allow Chinese Evergreens to dry out 50 to 75% of the way before thoroughly watering. Take care to not overwater Chinese Evergreens as they will quickly begin to decline if they are watered too frequently.

Soil – Moist, well draining soil like Espoma Potting Soil.

Temperature – Temperatures between 65° and 80° are ideal. Don’t expose Chinese Evergreens to temperatures below 55° and protect them from drafts.

Humidity – Chinese Evergreens prefer high levels of humidity. Regular misting, a nearby humidifier or a tray of pebbles and water are all great ways to increase humidity levels. Alternatively, if you have the space and light, bathrooms are great locations for Chinese Evergreens as they’re the most humid rooms in most houses.

Fertilization – Slow release fertilizers, such as Dynamite, are the best choice for Chinese Evergreens as they feed slowly over long periods of time.

Size – Chinese Evergreens average 1 to 2 feet tall and wide depending on variety.

Repotting – Due to their slow growing nature, Chinese Evergreens usually only need to be repotted once every 2 to 3 years. When repotting, select a container with good drainage and no more than 1 to 2 sizes larger than their current container.

Propagation – Easily propagated by either dividing the plant while repotting or by stem cutting.

Toxicity – Toxic to people and pets if ingested.
